Surry Scenic Bikeway Points of Interest and Route Descriptions

Surry has over 500 miles of designated bikeways that provide access to all of our communities and attractions. The route provides challenges for all levels of cyclists and showcases the beautiful geography of our community. Experience the distinctive flavors of Surry County Wine Country along the different loops at nearby Kimron Springs Vineyards, Rock Hill Vineyards, Hutton Vineyards, William Cornelius Vineyards, Stony Knoll Vineyards, Round Peak Vineyards, Bog Turtle Vineyards, Blue Zephyr Vineyards, Shelton Vineyards, Carolina Heritage Vineyards and Grassy Creek Vineyards. A picnic lunch can be enjoyed along various loops at the Lowgap Community Center, Fisher River Park, Shoals Community Park, Westfield Community Center, Pilot Mountain State Park, and Historic Village of Rockford or Cumberland Knob Recreation Area along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Dobson-Elkin Loop
Throughout this loop riders will truly experience the rolling foothills of Surry County. This route will takes cyclist through Historic Downtown Elkin along the Yadkin River and north to Dobson, the County Seat. Pastoral farm settings accompany much of this route as riders continue by Fisher River Park and the Historic Edwards Franklin House. Along the western part of the route you’ll discover the Mitchell River Gamelands which encompasses over 1,700 acres of managed public access for hunting and fishing, includes a portion of Little Mountain and more than nine miles of Mitchell River tributaries. Ride through the small community of Mountain Park and take a rest at their community park.
Rockford Connector
Use this connector to discover the Historic Village of Rockford , located along the Yadkin River. Once the seat of government for Surry County, the county then encompassed modern day Forsyth, Stokes, and Yadkin counties. A number of historical buildings can be explored, such as the Rockford General Store, a canoe and kayak outfitter, a North Carolina Civil War Trail site, the Rockford Inn, Rockford Park, and the old Rockford Methodist Church.
Lowgap-Mount Airy Loop
Within this route riders will experience big climbs and long down hills along the base of the Blue Ridge.  Traveling through the northern end of the county you’ll see the historic Edwards-Franklin home along the Fisher River near Lowgap.  Further north you can find your access onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Cumberland Knob Recreational Area, the highest point in Surry County. After cruising through the rural areas of the county riders will find themselves back in Mount Airy the counties largest city. Here you can stop at many different restaurants for a rest or explore the town at your own pace.
Mount Airy-Pilot Mountain Loop
Along this route cyclists will ride past the world’s largest open faced granite quarry and the gravesite of Eng and Chang Bunker, siamese twins that lived in the Mount Airy area during the 19th century. As you journey near the southern end of the county near Shoals and the Yadkin River, you will discover the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm that has been designated a 20th Century Living Historical Farm. This farm focuses on informing and educating citizens on the lifestyles of those who lived on a rural piedmont farm in the early 20th century. Horne Creek is also the home to the Southern Heritage Apple Orchard, the only one of its kind in the United States.
State Park Connector
Challenge yourself up Pilot Mountain State Park 1,400 feet above the rolling countryside of the upper Piedmont plateau. This National Natural Landmark since 1976, is the solitary peak and remnant of the ancient Saura Mountains once known as “Jomeokee” great guide or “Pilot” by the Saura Indians.
Westfield-Mount Airy Loop
Throughout this route riders will experience a mixture of urban and rural areas as they ride through the Town of Mount Airy and the rural community of Westfield. The terrain will offer riders a challenge as they roll along the hills of this scenic area of the county. Riders can rest at the Westfield Community Center and enjoy a picnic lunch or stop at the diner for a warm meal.
Holly Springs-Siloam Connector
For the rider wanting to add or subtract to the route length, this connector is provided from the Westfield-Mount Airy Loop to the Mount-Airy Pilot Mountain Connector.
